"Whenever I make selections for a juried competition I begin with the understanding that my work is inherently subjective. It is not an impartial process but an attempt to find something new within that vast universe we call photography and art. I am trying to mine the works that have been submitted to find the core of an idea, something I have not seen before, some set of visual clues that will coalesce into a coherent whole. I look for an overarching theme, the kernel of an idea, and an enduring vision that will enable us to see and understand the world in a new way. Each of the sections I studied—professional, non-professional, and student portfolios and single images—for this project should give us a view of contemporary ideas in the context of their own world.
I found a number of common themes among the photographs I saw. There were images about people, politics, humanitarian concerns, war, the land, landscape, nature, people’s relationship to the land, and people’s feelings for each other, family, community, and memory. I am always interested in how art can help us remember the moment the present becomes past. We want to remember things as they once were, to hold on to our memories, and use them to address our future. Or maybe this results from our contemporary embrace of new technologies like digital photography and video, which allow us to reexamine our past (and how things change) in new and innovative ways. After all, we live in a technological age in which it is sometimes easier to connect globally and share images across great physical and cultural spaces than it is to communicate across a room. Consider the impact of mobile phones, Facebook, YouTube, and Flicker on how we make and share images, define our communities, and connect our lives with others.
What can we learn from the diverse content found in this selection? What I see is a group of artists who are keenly aware of their surroundings and who travel the world to learn and picture worlds outside their own. So the more we consider the place and context in which they work, the more information we have to help us understand their pictures. Artists today often use the tools of history, memory, archives, and traditional media to construct a new sense of their place. Just as we learn about the past from our own family photographs or heirlooms packed away in a shoebox, these artists create new work from both memories and recently established relationships.
It is most interesting to me that each work, in its own way, provides a subjective experience for the viewer—one rooted in the artist’s experience—which allows us to bring our own understanding to these images."

The festival will take place at venues across Derby, UK from 4th March to 3rd April 2011. The diversity and quality of the programme, designed for practitioners and enthusiasts alike, builds on the past four successful festivals. FORMAT 11 is the biggest and best FORMAT so far.

Sony World Photography Awards 2011 - Open Competition
Dear Ova,
Thank you for entering into the Sony World Photography Awards Open Competition. The Honorary Judging Committee for this year’s Awards have been exceptionally impressed with the vast amount of high quality images entered as well as the outstanding amount of entries from photographers around the world.
From a total of 51,878 photographs entered into the Open Competition alone, it was certainly a difficult decision for all our esteemed judges to narrow the many excellent entries down to a shortlist and we thank you for your hard work and commitment to capturing and submitting some amazing images.
Whilst you have not been shortlisted into the top 10 in each category your work has been selected for commendation which is given to the top 50 images in each category. The commended images will appear on the website in due course but, significantly, will also feature in the official 2011 Sony World Photography Awards Winner’s Book.
Well done.
For your reference, the entries that have been shortlisted were announced on February 1st and the winners will be announced on the 27th of April, at the Sony World Photography Awards ceremony in London.

Syngenta has announced the winners of its 2010 Photo Prize competition.
Nigel Hallett from Australia, Zoltan Balogh from Hungary and Mario Pereda from Spain were awarded first, second and third prize respectively. The winning photos were selected from 3800 entries, from 87 countries, based upon their quality, creativity and interpretation of Syngenta's purpose: Bringing plant potential to life. Osvaldo Hamer (aka Ova Hamer)from Argentina was selected as Judge´s Top Favorite for his photo "Building Confidence".
The winners were announced today at a special exhibition at the Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland, as part of Syngenta's 10th Anniversary celebrations.
"The breadth and quality of the work submitted to the 2010 Syngenta Photo Prize reflects the standing the competition has within the global photographic community," said award-winning professional photographer Marcus Lyon, Chairman of the Judging Panel and Exhibition Curator. "Moreover, the commitment Syngenta has shown to this initiative through the Basel exhibition is a significant step towards this becoming a recognized award for photographic excellence."
"As we celebrate our 10th Anniversary, I have enjoyed seeing so many creative and original interpretations of our company's purpose," said Mike Mack, Syngenta CEO. "Agriculture comes in all shapes and sizes. The power of photography brings the richness and diversity of our industry to life. The photos are a great reflection of our daily job, where we work with farmers in the field and the environment they live in."
Syngenta employees also submitted over 900 photographs, with winning entries from the Netherlands, the UK and Germany. All external and internal winning entries were judged upon their creative interpretation, color and composition, and quality and technique. The diverse judging panel included Syngenta representatives, a Syngenta customer and professional and amateur photographers.
The annual Syngenta Photo Prize seeks outstanding images of plants, landscapes, communities and technologies in the context of global agriculture. Photographer Osvaldo Hamer (aka Ova Hamer) of Argentina was presented
with the 4th Annual Photography Masters Cup Honor of Distinction (3rd Place) in the category of Silhouette at a prestigious Nomination & Winners Photo Show attended by over 40,000 online viewers who logged on live from 154 countries to see the climax of the industry's most important event for color photography.
The awards international Jury included captains of the industry ranging from Christie's in New York, National Geographic Channel, Fox Broadcasting Company, Amsterdam Worldwide, Kodak USA to Esquire in London who honored Color Masters with 235 coveted title awards in 31 categories. The judges reviewed thousands of images submitted from every corner of the globe online for eight weeks before making their final nominations and Osvaldo Hamer's "Give me 10", an exceptional image entered in the Silhouette category, received a high percentage of votes overall.

The 2009 WPGA Annual Exhibition
The 2009 WPGA Annual Exhibition opening and artist reception will be held in Madrid in The Circle of Fine Arts on June 21st, 2010. 60 artists from 12 countries will exhibit their awarded works, which will be available onsite for purchase; a large portion of the proceeds of the sales will be donated to Save the Children.
The overall awardees Dilip Bhatia (India), Larry Louie (Canada), and John Delaney (US) will be attending the opening and artists reception and will be signing the Book WPGA 2009 Annual available for sale during the exhibition.

Syngenta employees also submitted over 900 photographs, with winning entries from the Netherlands, the UK and Germany. All external and internal winning entries were judged upon their creative interpretation, color and composition, and quality and technique. The diverse judging panel included Syngenta representatives, a Syngenta customer and professional and amateur photographers.
The annual Syngenta Photo Prize seeks outstanding images of plants, landscapes, communities and technologies in the context of global agriculture. The website www.syngentaphoto.com is dedicated to the photo prize and features all of the 2010 winning entries and submissions, and showcases the winners from previous years.
Together with the judges’ top 70 favorites, the 6 winning photographs are featured in a special exhibition that opened on Tuesday November 16 at the Kunsthalle in Basel, Switzerland. The exhibition forms an important part of Syngenta’s 10th anniversary celebrations.-

Photographer Osvaldo Hamer (aka Ova Hamer) of Argentina was presented
with the 4th Annual Photography Masters Cup Honor of Distinction (3rd Place) in the category of Silhouette at a prestigious Nomination & Winners Photo Show attended by over 40,000 online viewers who logged on live from 154 countries to see the climax of the industry's most important event for color photography.
The awards international Jury included captains of the industry ranging from Christie's in New York, National Geographic Channel, Fox Broadcasting Company, Amsterdam Worldwide, Kodak USA to Esquire in London who honored Color Masters with 235 coveted title awards in 31 categories. The judges reviewed thousands of images submitted from every corner of the globe online for eight weeks before making their final nominations and Osvaldo Hamer's "Give me 10", an exceptional image entered in the Silhouette category, received a high percentage of votes overall.

The 2009 WPGA Annual Exhibition
The 2009 WPGA Annual Exhibition opening and artist reception will be held in Madrid in The Circle of Fine Arts on June 21st, 2010. 60 artists from 12 countries will exhibit their awarded works, which will be available onsite for purchase; a large portion of the proceeds of the sales will be donated to Save the Children.
The overall awardees Dilip Bhatia (India), Larry Louie (Canada), and John Delaney (US) will be attending the opening and artists reception and will be signing the Book WPGA 2009 Annual available for sale during the exhibition.
